How I paint!
You asked for it, you got it, here's the breakdown of how I finished my new painting. The title of this little darling is Medical Mermaid and if you're lucky enough to be in NY this week, you can see it face to face this Saturday, May 9th from 7-10pm at 407 Broome St. #7A. There will be free booze and tons of insane walking art pieces and eccentric weirdos to ogle (like me!).

Anyway, look under the cut to see the process that lead up to this piece BIG pictures ahead!

Step 1- Sketch like a mofo! I had to have a face for the mermaid, I went through a lot of different faces before I came up with the one that felt right. You can see closeups of the sketches here

Rough sketch/layout</a>
Step 2- Lay that bad boy out. I had been inspired by this amazing and rather pricey paper that I found, so I made sure to make a rough draft on some cheap computer paper. Here shes got much more of her limbs than she ended up having in the final piece.

Step 3- I'm skipping the part on what a pain in the ass it was to cut that fancy iridescent paper to fit into the frame. Now I lay out my drawing in charcoal. This took a couple of tries before the finished drawing, I always use a soft vine charcoal which is easy to wipe off and start over even when working with delicate paper like this!

Step 4- Then I bust out the acrylic and start blocking in the skin. Usually I'd start by painting in a background color that matches the tone of the painting but I wanted to showcase this beautiful, shimmering paper, so I skipped that and went right to the painting itself.

Step 5- I start adding some shading to the skin while I still have that paint wet. The darker tones are made by going up a shade or two from the color I mixed for the skin, even the parts that look "black" are actually mixed from the original skin tone. You can really see how awesomely sparkly the paper is here!

Step 6- I mixed a new color for the brace she is wearing, it is inspired by a good friend of mine who had to wear a similar brace after breaking part of her spine in an accident. I decided there was a little too much white/skintone color going on, so I made the bandages on her stumps a dingy, old color.

Step 7- I paint the seashell nailed on to her brace in similar colors to the bandages on stumps and paint in the "crown" of surgical instruments with bright silver ink and acrylic. Of course the flash on my camera killed the silver ink detailing in the crown, but you've got a rough idea what she looks like!

So there you have it, that's a bit of my artistic process in a nutshell!

Rock on,
Rainbow Blight

That's really good! I love the frame you put it in. Do you paint/draw often? You should post more of your stuff on here. ^_^

I actually started this piece with the frame, I found it discarded on the sidewalk and had to have it. I knew it would inspire something special ^_^ I draw all the time, but I don't paint as often. Usually I put up my artsy stuff on Flickr or my deviantart page, but I'm going to start putting up more here too ;)

The plastic can holder thingy was a clever idea.
I love the frame too.
